‘The Preacher’s Wife’ Released This Day In 1996

Whitney’s wonderful holiday film The Preacher’s Wife was released on this day (December 13) in 1996 in the U.S. Based on The Bishop’s Wife from 1947 (and book by Robert Nathan), Whitney starred alongside Denzel Washington, Courtney B. Vance, Loretta Devine and Jenifer Lewis in this family film directed by Penny Marshall. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Original Music or Comedy Score (the wonderful Hans Zimmer scored the film). It also received five NAACP Image Award nominations and won two – Whitney won for Outstanding Lead Actress and Loretta Devine won for Outstanding Supporting Actress. The soundtrack to this day remains the best-selling gospel album of all time and included songs performed by Whitney, Cissy Houston, Shirley Caesar, Monica, Faith Evans, The Georgia Mass Choir and others.
