“I Have Nothing” was the third single off the hit soundtrack The Bodyguard and was Whitney’s first song to be nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Original Song”. The video was directed by Steve Barron, who also directed the videos for Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”, Madonna’s “Burning Up” and the innovative music video for A-Ha’s “Take On Me”. Similar to the other videos from The Bodyguard soundtrack, “I Have Nothing” is interspersed with scenes from the hit movie and shows Whitney singing to guests at a dinner party. With a beautiful beaded head-piece and matching gown, Whitney lets her voice take center stage. Within a month of its release in February 1994, Whitney had 3 songs in the top 11 slots of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart: “I Will Always Love You”, “I’m Every Woman” and “I Have Nothing”. “I Have Nothing” proved that The Bodyguard soundtrack was unlike any other movie soundtrack before it and cemented Whitney as a true pop icon.
