In 1988, Whitney Paid Tribute To Nelson Mandela At His 70th Birthday Celebration

June 11, 1988 (31 years ago today), Whitney paid tribute to Nelson Mandela at his 70th birthday celebration at the Free Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley Stadium in the U.K. The show was broadcast to 67 countries to an audience of 600 million people as part of a push to end Apartheid in South Africa. Many artists performed including Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Eurythmics, George Michael, Peter Gabriel and more. Whitney performed eight songs including gospel song “He/I Believe” with her mother Cissy Houston. Six years later, Whitney would be the first major artist to perform in South Africa post-Apartheid.
