On June 2, 1987 (33 years ago), Whitney Houston’s second album, titled Whitney, was released. The album broke many records, including debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart — making it the first album by a female artist to do so. It remained at the top for 11 consecutive weeks and the first four singles all peaked at #1. Lead single “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” won a GRAMMY for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. This album is close to Diamond certification and if such happens, Whitney would be the first African American woman to have three Diamond album certifications.
