Whitney’s first TV concert, Welcome Home Heroes with Whitney Houston aired on HBO TV on March 31, 1991 (29 years ago today). The show was broadcast live from a naval hangar at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia, for 3,500 servicemen and women returning from the Gulf War. After performing “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl a couple of months earlier, Whitney decided to carry it over to a concert to honor the troops and their families. HBO agreed to unscramble their signal to make the show available to more than 50 million households, and it gave them their highest ratings at that time. Whitney said this about the experience: “Until I spent time with these military people, I didn’t really appreciate how special they are. I was surrounded by courteous, brave men and women … I sang my heart out to them … and still felt them give more in return.”
